Paul McCartney has become the first artist to sign to the new record label of coffee house Starbucks. If that sounds like a stupid idea, it shouldn’t. The point is this: 44 million people every week visit one more of over 10,000 Starbucks stores around the world. Some people, like George Michael, visit a couple of times a day – in fact, he likes it so much that occasionally, if it’s a nice hot day, George just pops into Starbucks for a chat to someone in the queue for coffee, and doesn’t even buy a “Mocha Frappuccino Light, no cream”. Just has a chat, and then leaves without getting a drink. So, there’s no doubt – people love hanging out in Starbucks.
Anyway, back to the point in hand. Signing to the Starbucks label is a pretty interesting idea. People who visit Starbucks, particularly those that relax for an hour or two in a comfy armchair, drinking Venti Lattes, will get to hear the label’s music. And the first step to getting people to like a piece of music, is to get them to hear it.
