It’s great to see all of George Michael’s fans rallying around to offer him support. However, it’s a little surprising just how many seem to be in denial about the events surrounding his arrest. People seem to actually believe that George hadn’t been smoking some strong stuff the night he was arrested. But here’s the thing: you don’t fall asleep in the middle of driving home on busy roads like those around Hyde Park corner, without having been on something. Sorry. You just don’t.
George’s statement was very smart:
The only thing I care about is that people know that I was properly tested by the police doctor on Saturday night, who stated to the officers present that I was not impaired in any way.
Notice that he doesn’t say that he hadn’t taken anything that night. It just states publically that the police doctor was unable to find any evidence of it. The truth is, though, if George doesn’t modify his behaviour, next time he (and others who share the road with him) might not be so lucky. I’m not meaning to be sanctimonious about this: after all, many of us have done silly things on the road.
The bottom line is that I think the supportive position to take here, is simply to hope that his being being caught, but getting away with it, has been enough of a shock to his system that he’ll be a little more careful in the future.
